Vermont Psychology Licensing
- The very first and foremost expectation for incoming psychologist applicants in Vermont is the completion of a Ph.D. or Psy.D. in Psychology. The program you choose at this level should also hold accreditation from the American Psychological Association (APA) – the leading agency for professionals in the field of Psychology. You may spend around 4 years working towards this degree program in both in-depth classes and field experiences. These accredited programs were designed for professionals working towards a career in psychological practice with individuals in need.
- There are 2 forms of supervised experience that you may be expected to complete prior to receiving your license. The first component takes place during your doctoral degree program. The Vermont Board of Psychological Examiners outlines that you can receive up to 2,000 hours of supervised experience while in your doctoral program. You may participate in internships and field residencies depending on what you individual program requires. The total experience you can receive at this level is about 1 year.
- Once you have successfully completed your degree program, you can begin the second part of your supervise experience requirement. Your state outlines that applicants for licensure should gain an additional 2,000 hours – totaling 4,000 hours – after completion of the doctoral degree program. You can locate a field placement while still in your degree program and begin this part of your experience after graduation.
- The state of Vermont requires that you then submit your application for licensing consideration to the Board prior to moving forward. Your initial licensing application should accompany your official transcripts from all colleges and verification forms from your supervised experience. The fee for applying to licensure as a psychologist is currently $175 and due at the time of application. The Board may then review all information submitted before approving you to move forward with the remaining requirements.
- Your state currently requires 2 levels of testing before license approval. The first test you may take is the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP). This test is a national examination for incoming psychologists and requires knowledge and practice prior to taking. It consists of multiple choice questions and must be passed before moving forward. After successfully passing the EPPP, you can sit for the Vermont Jurisprudence examination as a final requirement during this phase.
- Once the Board has accepted all passing scores from your tests, you can be approved for licensing as a psychologist. You should prepare to maintain your license over time through regular renewals and continuing education. Vermont outlines a 2-year recertification cycle during which you should complete 60 continuing education credits. The fee for a renewal application in this state is $150 and is due at the time of application.
Trends & Outlook for Psychology Careers
Vermont allows graduates to become licensed at both the master’s and doctoral level. After the completion of an appropriate and accredited degree program, graduates may apply for licensure through the state department.
The state of Vermont does require that some post-graduate experience be conducted prior to licensure, as well as passing the state board exam in psychology.
These requirements guarantee only the most qualified practitioners are licensed by the state. Since psychologists work with very fragile people, it is important the professionals responsible for their care are only the best educated. Having a license in psychology broadens the possibilities of the degree holder.
However, there are just as many job opportunities available for those that cease education after obtaining an undergraduate degree. For those that obtained licensure in clinical psychology, salaries average at $51,360 per year. The amount of current workers in this state in comparison to the population expresses the need for more professionals. As the populations around the United States continue to rise, the need for qualified psychological professionals will rise with them.
